Cook bake and serve with copperchef

I was elucidating the virtues of making the right food choices, healthy, organic etc. and a question that a friend asked me, ‘Have you thought about the pots and pans you are putting it in?’, made me realize that I had missed out on the most vital part, the cookware!! I had not been mindful about that aspect at all!

A quick research told me that non-stick cookware or kitchenware is generally made using poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). These substances release perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a carcinogenic chemical when heated. Many of them contain dangerous heavy metals that can flake off during cooking and into your food. Aluminium and Teflon should be avoided at all costs according to reports. This was enough to set me on my quest for the perfect non-toxic cookware brand! I embarked on my quest for the perfect, multipurpose cookware that was safe to use, looked good and was easy to maintain – a herculean task indeed!

During one of my regular grocery shopping trips to Choithrams Supermarket, I came across the Copperchef brand of cookware that they have recently launched. What I saw and learnt about the product was extremely convincing. It is coated in Cerami-Tech non-stick technology that allows you to cook without oils or butter and free of PTFEs or PFOAs. In addition, they claimed the pan has a “copper infused” coating that allows it to heat evenly and quickly up to 850 degrees F. The stainless-steel base allows it to be used on an induction cooker as well (a good one!).  I was told that Copper Chef can be used both on top of the stove as well as in the oven, replacing a baking dish, roasting pan, rice cooker, steamer, stock pot, and wok!!! Wow!! That is perfect for someone like me who goes Marie Kondo in the kitchen on a regular basis clearing out pots and pans that are not used! I would probably love to serve in it too for that coppery flair to my dining table! Oh yes, it is dishwashing machine safe too! Well, it ticked all the boxes for me, and I decided to invest in the copper pan and try it out. It cost 169 AED which seemed a reasonably good price point for an item that promised so much.

Verdict:

I tried using it without any butter or oil and realized that it did need a dash of greasing before use. It did not need any butter or oil if used to roast cooked food that released oil of its own.  For example, my mushroom casserole made from steamed mushrooms turned a perfect golden brown without any oil or butter. It was perfect to make stew, cook rice, steam dumplings, make those quick stir fry veggies (wok style), bake (yes, the lasagna turned out flawless and tasty) and roast! My son, who is conscious of eating healthy, made a grilled sandwich and it turned out perfect without any greasing required. That was a thumbs up from him too! The part of the handle close to the pot turns a tad hot but that was not an issue for me. My verdict is a big Yes! I would definitely go for the entire copperchef cookware set and do away with all other kitchenware.
